Whenever I sit down with a new couple, I don't start with color swatches or flower types. Instead, I ask two fundamental questions that often catch them by surprise:
- "What do you want to feel when you walk into your wedding space?"
- "What do you want your guests to feel from the moment they arrive?"
Imagine the shift in perspective! These questions move us away from "what kind of chairs do we want?" and toward "what kind of memory are we creating?"
Interestingly, the answers to these two questions are almost always different. You and your partner might want to feel grounded, sacred, and deeply connected. Your guests, on the other hand, might need to feel welcomed, energized, and utterly pampered.

Why "Pretty" Isn't Enough
Let’s be honest: "pretty" is the baseline. You deserve a wedding that is stunning, of course! But visual beauty alone can sometimes feel hollow.
Think about a minimalist altar adorned with hundreds of flickering candles. Visually, it’s gorgeous. For our Black and mixed-race couples, this is often where we weave in the beautiful threads of heritage: through the vibrant textures of traditional fabrics or the electrifying rhythm of specific music that speaks to your roots.
The Architecture of a Feeling
So, how do we actually "design" a feeling? It’s a meticulous process of layering different sensory elements to create a cohesive atmosphere. Every decision we make is filtered through that initial question of feeling.
Lush Organic Minimalism
Consider the "vibe" of Lush Organic Minimalism. If you want to feel tranquil and refreshed, we might choose:
- Sight: A palette of sage greens, creams, and sun-bleached wood.
- Touch: Raw linen napkins that feel substantial and earthy in your hands.
- Sound: The soft, rhythmic sound of a fountain in the background.
Urban Industrial Glamour
If you want to feel sophisticated and electrifying, we might pivot to:
- Sight: Sharp lines, neon accents, and metallic finishes.
- Scent: A signature fragrance of leather and expensive oud.
- Lighting: Dramatic spotlights that make every guest feel like they’re at a high-end gala.
When you work with a trusted planner, these aren't just random choices. They are intentional "chapters" in your story.
Designing for Your Guests: The Journey
Your guests are the supporting cast in your love story, and their experience matters deeply. We think about the Guest Journey as a series of transitions.
When they arrive, do they feel a sense of awe? We might use a grand entrance with a "sunset bonfire" vibe to immediately signal that this isn't a typical Tuesday.
During dinner, do they feel relaxed and cherished? This is where we focus on tactile luxury: the weight of the cutlery, the softness of the chair cushions, and a menu that tells the story of your favorite travels together through taste.
By designing for their emotional needs, you ensure that they aren't just "attending" a wedding: they are being transformed by it. This is how you create those lasting memories that people talk about for decades!
